Motorola Unveils Defy 2- The World’s First Rugged Android phone with Two Way Satellite Texting, and Satellite Link Bluetooth Accessory

Motorola partnered with  Bullitt Group (British mobile manufacturer) to launch a built-in two-way satellite messaging. Motorola has also announced a compact satellite link  Bluetooth device that gives any Android and iOS device satellite connectivity. This will be the world’s first Rugged Android phone with two-way satellite texting and will be called as CAT S75 IN Europe, Africa, and the Middle East with a slightly different rear cover design.

Motorola Defy 2 Features and Specifications:

The rugged device is IP68 and IP69K-certified dust, sand, dirt, and waterproof resistance. Furthermore, like all rugged smartphones, the Defy 2 has passed the MIL-STD810H test for withstanding tough environments. It is also designed to survive drops and falls. The handset also comes with Bullitt’s Hygiene+ technology, with all external surfaces manufactured with materials blended with antimicrobial, antibacterial additives.

The handset can be cleaned and sanitized with soap and water or even with Alcohol wipes. As the device can be used externally it can withstand high and low-temperature extremes, salt mist conditions, vibrations, humid environments, and tumble tests.

The Defy 2, which is the successor of the Defy 1 comes with a 6.6-inch FHD+ display, with a 20:9 aspect ratio and up to 120Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, there will be a MediaTek Dimensity 930 octa-core 2.2GHz processor, coupled with 6GB RAM. The onboard storage of the phone is 128GB which can be extended further via a MicroSD card.

There is a 5000mAH battery with 15W fast charging support and Qi wireless charging, that can provide up to 2 days of power. On the camera front, there is an 8MP front-facing sensor and a triple rear camera setup of a 50MP main sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 2MP macro unit. Furthermore, it will run on the Android 12 operating system and will receive 2 OS updates and 5 years of security patches.

Motorola Defy Satellite Link:

The Motorola Defy Satellite Link is a Bluetooth accessory that offers Bullitt Satellite Connectivity. It comes with an attachment loop that allows any Android-iOS display to utilize the full functionality of the application which includes two-way messaging, location sharing, and SOS assistance.

This Bluetooth device has also passed Mil-Spec 810H testing and is IP68 rating certified for waterproof and dustproof. There are also physical SOS and location Check-In buttons and will have a 600mAh battery. The device will use the first 3GPP standards-based satellite NTN (direct-to-device) service, that provides affordable and continuous coverage internationally over existing, well-established infrastructure.

This technology allows customers to message over satellite, as long as they have a clear view of the sky. It will connect to any smartphone and messages sent or received over satellite will be deducted from the satellite messaging subscriber plan at no cost. This is compatible with iOS 14 or above and Android 10 and above.

Availability and Pricing:

The Rugged Motorola Defy 2 will be available from the 2nd quarter of 2023 from selected operators across North America, Latin America, and Canada, priced from US$599 (Approx. Rs. 49,549) which includes 12 months of SOS Assist.

The Motorola Defy Satellite Link will be available from April 2023 across international retailers. The Bluetooth device alone is priced at US$99 (Approx. Rs. 8,190). A plan with a 12-month subscription to the Essentials Messaging Service Plan (up to 30 two-way messages per month and SOS Assist) will start at US$149 (Approx. Rs. 12,325).
