Apple AirPods Pro 2: Apple is reportedly planning to launch the second version of the AirPods Pro with a USB Type-C charging port. The rumor stems from the references found in Apple’s latest iOS release, iOS 16.4 beta. Ming-Chi Kuo, a seasoned analyst, tweeted about the development and said that the new AirPods Pro 2 with the Type-C charging port will begin mass shipping in the second or third quarter of 2023.
The EU’s Influence on the Type-C Connector Adoption
The reason behind the shift from the Lightning port to the Type-C port is likely due to the European Union’s ruling that mandates all mobile devices and electronic gadgets to feature Type-C ports. While Apple has already incorporated the Type-C connector in its Mac and iPad devices, the AirPods and iPhone lineup still rely on the company’s proprietary Lightning connector. However, the references found in iOS 16.4 beta suggest that the upcoming AirPods Pro 2 is ready to embrace the Type-C port for charging.
I think this is likely the USB-C version of the AirPods Pro 2, with mass shipments expected in 2Q23-3Q23. By the way, Apple currently appears to have no plans for USB-C versions of the AirPods 2 & 3.

References in iOS 16.4 Beta Rollout
As per reports, the new version of iOS 16.4 beta has references to the new AirPods carrying the model number A3048, and the AirPods case with model number A2968. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has speculated that these references could indicate the launch of the AirPods Pro 2 with the Type-C charging port.
Unclear Update for AirPods 2 and AirPods 3
It remains uncertain whether Apple will update AirPods 2 and AirPods 3 with the Type-C connector. Currently, the focus appears to be on the AirPods Pro 2, which is slated to begin mass shipping in Q2 or Q3 of 2023.
iPhone 15 Series Likely to Shift to Type-C Charging Port
It is highly probable that the iPhone 15 series will feature a Type-C charging port. Despite the EU’s ruling, the upcoming iPhone 15 may still retain the Lightning port, albeit on select models. However, there are indications that some models of the iPhone 15 may switch to the Type-C port.
What Does This Mean for Apple Customers?
For Apple customers who already own a device with a Lightning port, it means investing in a new cable or adapter for compatibility with the new Type-C port. On the positive side, the Type-C port offers faster data transfer speeds and supports more power delivery options than the Lightning port.
